Located in northern Portugal’s Minho province, Vinho Verde directly translates to green wine. Olé & Obrigado’s founders, Patrick Mata and Alberto Orte were inspired to recreate the countless afternoons spent seaside in Portugal drinking local wines. While Olé is considered the pre-eminent importer of Portuguese and Spanish wines to the United States, many are niche, sought-after, and exemplary introductions to the lesser-known regions of the Iberian Peninsula. This wine stands in striking contrast as a refreshing (no pun intended!) alternative. While we often associate green characters in wine as conditions and colors of fruit, herbs, and savoriness, its context in verde references its remarkable youthfulness. Given Portugal’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, Vinho Verde has exceptional versatility with fresh seafood. From raw oysters, steamed mussels, and prawns to a Sunday afternoon spent making Paella, don’t underestimate the seriousness of this wine as a perfect pairing. With all that being said, don’t take it too seriously! It’s so delicious, they bottled it in one liter format. When in doubt have a second one chilled, with waves nearby.
